Chapter Thirteen
Diana stopped by the coffee shop on her way home. Not because she needed coffee, but because she wanted to see a friendly face that she knew was actually friendly.
She studied Jimmy through the window for a moment. It was hard because there was no way to be absolutely certain, but she felt he was all right. Just like she'd known it wasn't Michael. Or Sean.
"Your usual?" Jimmy asked with a grin when she approached the counter.
"Nah, surprise me."
"What?!" he gasped in mock terror. "Are you sure?"
"Yep."
"Okay, one strawberry latte coming up."
"What?!"
"You'll like it."
"Uh-huh."
"You said surprise you! It's surprising! Sit down; I'll bring it to you."
Diana picked a table near the window and watched the people walk past. Some looked happy. Some sad. Others grumpy, cheerful, determined. None of them looked like a stalker. But honestly, what would a stalker even look like? It's not like there was a stamp on their head identifying them.
"Bad day?" Jimmy asked, sitting across from her.
Diana glanced back at the counter and saw Jimmy's assistant had taken over. "He slashed my tires," she said.
"That's bad."
"Yeah, and I keep thinking why? But anyway," Diana said, shaking her head. "How's your day?" Life wasn't all about her. She needed to start SEEING people. Maybe then she wouldn't get into these messes.
"It was good. I got to make someone a strawberry latte."
Diana laughed and took a sip. "Actually, it's not bad. It's not good, but it's not bad."
Jimmy chuckled and said, "So I had an idea. I'm not working Wednesday so I was thinking maybe I could watch your house and follow the drone if it comes. I have a motorcycle, so it should be easy enough to follow it."
Diana automatically shook her head. "No, that's too dangerous."
"It's a stakeout. Stakeouts aren't dangerous," he argued.
"You don't understand," she said. Even if it was her family, they or he had already murdered once. She couldn't put Jimmy at risk. She wouldn't. "Thank you, Jimmy, really. But I can't let you do that. It's too dangerous. Mr. X is too dangerous."
"Mr. X? Seriously?"
"My sister named him."
"Are you sure?" Jimmy asked. "I'm offering here. I don't know how else you're gonna nail this sicko."
"I don't know either. But I'm not going to use you to do it. Thank you. Now seriously, how's your day?"
Jimmy laughed and started to tell her about a customer who had come in earlier and ordered twenty-seven different coffees. "By the time I was finished, the line was out the door," he said with a chuckle.
"That's how good your coffee is," Diana said. "People are willing to wait for it."
"They just wanted to see me finish. I think I broke a Guinness world record."
By the time Diana left the coffee shop for home she felt more relaxed than she had in days. It had been nice to have a conversation about someone else for a change. For a moment her worries and problems had seemed far away.
There was no note on her porch so Mr. X hadn't been there.
